Beware the Garage Conversion Cowboys
When we started there were no other specialist companies and now there are quite a few. Some of them are reputable builders who will no doubt do a good job for you however there are many companies in the market who are little more than opportunists. To help steer you through the maze of garage convertors these are just a few things that you should probably ask every company who you ask to quote for your garage conversion.
1. Does the company have a certificate of incorporation?
This certificate proves how long they have been in business. Every company has to start sometime but do you want your garage to be the first conversion they've attempted?
A copy of the GCC Certificate of Incorporation is available to view here whenever you see an agent for the Garage Conversion Company.
2. Can I speak to some previous customers?
When you are considering a conversion with GCC we insist that you are able to contact any of our previous customers who have given us permission to pass on their details.
3. Are you registered for VAT?
By not registering for VAT but charging you the extra 15% 'VAT' they get to pocket the extra. This is a typical cowboy trick and you need to be aware of it from the start.
4. Who is actually going to convert my garage?
There are many companies working in this field (you know who you are) who claim to have their own team waiting in the wings ready to convert your garage. Unfortunately, the reality is that they are simply middlemen who collect the deposit from you and then pass your details to a local builder to complete the job. If you wanted the local builder to do the job then you could have just rung them in the first place.
GCC actually do have our own fully trained teams that only install garage conversions. With over 3000 conversions throughout the UK in the past 5 years these teams are real garage conversion experts.
5. Can I see a copy of your public and employer's liability insurance?
Every company that is carrying out work in your home should have liability insurance as accidents can happen. Without the proper insurance the company are taking a risk with not only your house and property but possibly even with your life.
GCC obviously have all requisite insurance and all our agents have a copy of the certificate that they can show you when you ask.
6. Can I visit a recent conversion that you have completed?
We have many customers who are so pleased with the work we have carried out they are willing to let potential new customers visit and see the completed conversion.
7. Are you a double glazing company in disguise?
There are a number of websites out there that are purporting to be garage conversion companies but the reality is that they are actually selling your details to double glazing companies. No matter what they try and tell you, converting a garage is not just a case of replacing the door with a nice PVC double glazed window.
You can spot these 'lead generating' websites by looking for tell tale clues such as
- There is no address of their office on the website
- The testimonials are not supported by names or scans of the original letters (a sure sign they are simply made up)
- The 'contact us' option is simply a freephone telephone number or a web enquiry form with no email address visible
- Some websites have even used our images on their pages claiming our work to be their own.
This website is owned & run by the Garage Conversion Company so any enquiry you send from this website is only delivered to us. We are not interested in selling your details to other companies and so you can rest assured that when we contact you it is with the intention of giving you the best possible quote we can for your garage conversion.
